When word spread late last week that Heather Locklear and Jack Wagner had called off their engagement -- and Locklear was seen on the red carpet at the "Breaking Dawn" premiere with her daughter Ava, not Wagner -- fans feared the worst.

Turns out those fears were unfounded as Wagner has set the record straight.

According to TMZ, the pair, who following a torid on-screen romance on Melrose Place,began dating in real life in 2007, was mired in too much baggage to make a new marriage viable.

They were too consumed with planning the wedding to have time for their children, Ava, Locklear's daughter with Richie Sambora is 13, and Wagner has two sons with his ex Kristina (who played Felicia to Wagner's Frisco Jones on General Hospital).

Although Wagner maintains that he and Locklear are still very much in love, they were worried about the stresses that a "blended family" would put on their kids and their relationship and decided to leave well enough alone.

Sounds practical and very grown up. Wonder if (and hope) it's true.
