'Zombieland' Eats The Box Office Competition Alive
Brrrraaaaiiinnnnssss...
Zombieland is out for blood. The new comedy horror flick, starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, has more gore and splattered body parts than you can shake a fist at. And according to the box office, it's just what the doctor ordered.
Zombieland took in an impressive $25 million at the weekend box office, leaving its competitors in the cinematic dust. Considering it only took $23 million to produce, the film is likely going to be very profitable for Sony, its studio.
Finishing in second place was last week's winner, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which added $16.7 million to its three week total to $83 million. The animated film, about a mad scientist who makes it rain cheeseburgers, has consistently captivated audiences.
Opening this weekend to disappointing box office draws were comedian Ricky Gervais' The Invention of Lying, with $7.4 million, and Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It, with $4.9 million. Barrymore's film, about a team of rag-tag roller derby girls, was heavily marketed and hyped, only to finish in seventh place tied with Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story.
